R.I.P Günter Peine

Today the club mourns the loss of Günter Peine, who died earlier this morning on his 92 birthday. Günter had been a member of FCSP since the age of 10. He joined the club as a member on 6th June 1930, and played his first game for the club just two days later. He played for the first team from 1939 until 1946, and then played many years for the reserve team, despite offers to join other clubs.

Günter always remained loyal to his club, and became the club’s honorary president in 2003, a role he kept for 4 years until he retired in 2007. In 1990, Günter was honoured for his 60 years of membership by being appointed into the General Assembly as an honorary member. In 2010 the club honoured him again, this time presenting him with the special recognition ‘Diamond Needle’ award. Günter was part of the the 100 year celebrations, and said “100 Years of FC St. Pauli, 90 years of Günter Peine and 80 years of membership in the club”.

The players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect tomorrow in the game against Aue.

Rest In Peace, Günter. You’ll Never Walk Alone.
