On Saturday 27th January United Glasgow FC and Glasgow St. Pauli fan club will be coming down to Leeds to play one-off exhibition matches against Yorkshire St. Pauli and Republica women. The matches will be played at the West Riding County FA ground in Woodlesford from noon onwards and everyone is welcome to attend. Entry is free with a collection tin for PAFRAS on the turnstiles.
United Glasgow’s set-up and inclusive ethos (particularly regarding refugees) inspired YSP to start our Football For All project all those years ago. After being beaten by them in Glasgow in August in seems appropriate to invite them down to Leeds for the return leg.
Since Glasgow St. Pauli’s inception in 2016 they have become one of the most active St. Pauli fanclubs and have done amazing work in the local community for refugees and people seeking asylum. The St. Pauli fanclub legends match will feature members from both fan clubs with a few ringers from further afield (Disco Shaun) to spice things up.
With a like-minded approach to football and politics, Republica and YSP have forged a strong partnership over the years culminating in Football For All becoming a Republica scouting program for their men’s team. Republica women will host UG women with potentially a few players from a team called St. Pauli thrown into the mix too.
Saturday 27th offers a rare occasion for the like-minded teams and fanclubs to get together and celebrate our collective inclusive ethos. Events like this are important in strengthening the ties between the clubs and forging networks that demonstrate the power of football for social change.
The matches will be followed by a gig/social for all those connected with Yorkshire St. Pauli, Republica, United Glasgow, Glasgow St. Pauli and other fanclubs at the Brudenell in the games room from 7.30 onwards. Bands confirmed so far are Greyhound, Crumbs and The Dauntless Elite. Ticket details to follow.
On Sunday we will be at Wharf Chambers to watch St. Pauli v Darmstadt from 3pm (delayed stream).
All details of the weekend of events can be found on the Facebook event. Please get in touch if you have any questions etc.
